–I am never cold, not ever. I could survive even with a deep frost around me… Only yesterday everything was allright, but this morning – it’s +7 ° C outdoors and I was so cold! Unbelievable.

In the afternoon everything was ready for the pre-start. The Valkeakoski Campus Event gathered all the students and staff of the Campus Unity at the sandfield venue.
Harri Tuomola is an experienced speaker, marketing professional and adventurer. He has travelled across all continents overland. He has owned a 2CVfor the past 15 years. During that time he has participated in seven 2CV World Meetings and driven his Citroen in 47 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. Harri, being no stranger to other cars either, has also organized and promoted various driving events in Finland and abroad. He is also a freelance off-road driving instructor for Land Rover Experience.
He works in the International Business Programme of HAMK University of Applied Sciences in Valkeakoski specializing in marketing and cross-cultural communication.
There are two men in the Finnish Touareg Trail Team, both very experienced adventure-drivers. They have travelled in many continents by Citroën “CVs”. Together Juha and Harri had driven 2CVs across Belarus, Ukraine and Turkey to Greece in 1999; to Arkhangelsk in the winter of 2002; to the Moldovan break-away republic of Transdnestria in 2003, and to the forbidden Kalastajasaarento in Pechanga in 2007.

- It is not very convenient to come to a crossroad and you absolutely don’t know which way is right; no maps, no GPS… Picture from Harri’s files.
–We have driven these sorts of trails many times before, without making any fuss – ei me oo tehty niistä numeroo. Now, it’s the very first time when we have 24 other teams as competitors on the same route, and quite a big support crew to look after us.
There are plenty of people in the support crew: scouting team (2 persons), catering team (3-4 persons, 1 truck), technical assistance (6 mechanics, 2 4x4’s, 1 truck), medical assistance team (1 doctor + 1 nurse), general Field logistics team (2 persons), safety & hygiene (1 person) and a GPS specialist (1 person).

The drivers’ blood type is documented on the car window. You never know what will happen en route.

A brief interview in the Campus Event’s opening session. What is behind this kind of madness, why do make this kind of journey?

A bunch of burana and the support of about 200 young ones in the Campus Day’s sandfield helped a lot. Now it’s getting hotter …
